History of Earth Day

The first Earth Day occurred on April 22, 1970, “putting environmental concerns on the front page.” Though many events led up to it, Earth Day was largely inspired by the student anti-war movement, an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, and the political climate. With growing smog in the air, rivers catching on fire, and increasing oil spills, it was clear that the environment was in crisis. 20 million Americans participated in demonstrations, marches, and rallies on this first Earth Day. Colleges and universities were a huge part of this action. Americans truly came together in the name of the planet.

Since 1970, the annual Earth Day celebrations have grown. Nearly every city in the US participates in some way, driven by passionate non-profits, environmental organizations, students, teachers, and individuals. With 10% of the US population, this first Earth day is still recognized as the largest organized public event in the world’s history.
